Our second trip this summer to Utica autocross brought out 18 miatas, a Ford Mustang, and a Saturn. It was a beautiful summer day, with conditions just right for maximum traction on the track. Twenty one drivers were ready to run. You could tell it would be a fast day when the track record for a stock miata was broken by Dan Baker on his first try. Dan didn't hold this record very long. Before day's end, Jorge Andujar blistered the timers with a 61.65 second run in his stock miata. Several newcomers to Utica came out. As always, they are greatly welcomed. Howard Hughes, Lourdes Andujar, and Tim Ohring took their first laps. Two members of the Lake Effect Miata Chapter, Sean G. and Nathan Hornig, also came out with their white miatas. Sean's 17 inch wheels and Nathan's racing stripes were real eyecatchers.
Best time of the day was set by Alan Skittlecorn in his Ford Mustang. Alan later borrowed Randy Stocker's modified Miata and rounded the track with times not too far behind his Ford, but not quite as fast as Randy. Meanwhile, Mark Bartowiak and Dave Schumacher each knocked four seconds off their best times from earlier this year. In the SPE class, Scott Arneman and Mark Klauer both broke the old record. Sal Leonardi had driven to Utica expecting a ho-hum day of racing in his Saturn station wagon because he had killed the clutch in his miata a day earlier. A gracious Scott Arneman loaned out his '95 R to Sal. Was Sal humble? No, he also broke the old SPE record and set a new lowest time with Scott's car. It was that type of day. Almost everyone lowered their "personal best" times for the Utica course. In conclusion, a fun and entertaining day for miata race fans.
