Autocross #6 Results

On a foggy Sunday morning, four miatas gathered at the Lake Forest Oasis. Mark Bartkowiak had been there since 6:30AM. Jorge Andujar and his friend Orlando came next. Harry Sue and his daughter Amy rolled up shortly afterwards. When Sal Leonardi came in, the small caravan headed north toward Wisconsin. The trip to Waukesha was a 74 mile drive. This morning found Wisconsin troopers posted almost every ten miles. Jorge's radar detector glowed a constant red as the crew motored up to the Waukesha Expo Center Grounds, about a dozen miles west of Milwaukee. There they found Scott Arneman all ready to go. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hughes made a late entrance, but were able to register just before it closed. Six miatas from Windy City entered the Milwaukee Region SCCA autocross.

The Milwaukee people had a nice course, well marked with pylons and not too confusing. That did not stop someone in a Honda Del Sol from starting out on the wrong side of the cones from the starting line, which scared the bananas out of the corner workers standing in harms way. In the adjoining lot, a horse show was taking place. Their area was full of pickup trucks, horse trailers, and some fine looking steeds. In another lot, the local firemen were showing off their equipment and putting on fire-fighting demonstrations. After the cars made their runs, they circled back to the "pits" on an access road. Little kids here would ask for autographs. In a convertible, how can you ignore such a request? All the miata drivers signed their cards and were heroes for the moment.

The racing promised to be good, but Nature ruined the day. Around noontime, a severe thunderstorm rolled in. All of the WCMC miata drivers were out working the course, but Howard's wife and Harry's daughter put up the tops and made sure everything got out of the rain. About an inch of water came down in 30 minutes. That ended the day.

Aftermath: Everyone reached home safely. Jorge's buddy was so impressed that he bought a miata the following weekend and showed up at Utica!
